Troubleshooting common dynamo's problems

This section is intended to suggest a systematic approach to locating and correcting generator malfunctions. The section is arranged according to the symptoms of the problem. The steps have been arranged in an attempt to do the easy checks first and prevent further damage when troubleshooting a disabled machine.

1. No voltage at out-put 

Cause:

  • Loss of residual.
  • Defective connections.
  • Defective brush.
  • Defective diodes
  • Defective windings.

Check and remedy:

  • Re-excite the field by 12V battery
  • Verify generator connections
  • Check, clean, or replace
  • Test and replace
  • Consult factory

2. Low voltage

Cause:

  • Under-speed operation.
  • Excessive load.
  • Defective diodes.

Check and remedy:

  • Check the speed and adjust as rated speed.
  • Reduce load.
  • Test and replace.

3. High voltage

Cause:

  • Over-speed operation.
  • Leading power factor.
  • Faulty metering.

Check and remedy:

  • Check speed and adjust as rated speed
  • Check the power factor of the load, if the power factor is leading, change the load configuration.
  • Check voltage with separate meter.

4. Fluctuating voltage

Cause:

  • Fluctuating engine speed.
  • Fluctuation load.
  • Loose terminal or load connections.
  • Loose or defective brush system.
  • Defective diodes.

Check and remedy:

  • Check engine and governor system for malfunctions.
  • Check a load for fluctuation.
  • Improve connections both mechanically and electrically.
  • Check, clean or replace.
  • Test and replace.

Note: All service procedures should be conducted by qualified maintenance personal. The technician has responsibility to keep all safety conditions before doing service. Replacement parts may be ordered through an authorized service center or directly from the factory.
